Black Girls Rock!

Posted in Live Show, Photos, Show Recap, SOBs Event on November 10, 2011 by SOBs

It was definitely a phenomenal event held at SOBs on October 13th which celebrated women of color in a showcase with several acts from various genres of music. The first act of the night was Be’la Dona, an all female band that brought the house down with their rendition of songs by popular artists. If you were in the building that night, you would have enjoyed performances by Lil’ Mama, Rah Digga, Melanie Fiona and Estelle, all of whom showed why they rock with their amazing stage presence and vocals.

Savant (Crash Course Leaked Series)

By:Suzanne Biello

With everybody under the sun these days claiming to be a rapper/emcee, few actually live up to the expectation. One individual who does however, is Savant aka Stanstro. This Chicago native, who now resides in Tucson, Arizona is nothing less than breathtaking when he blesses mic.  Gregory “Savant” Daggett has always possessed a passion for music and literary arts. Involved in general music since age 7, and a trumpet player since age 10, he wasn’t officially exposed to hip hop until age 12. Although no particular emcee caught his ear right away, he was intrigued with the entire concept of an individual or a group of people speaking over instrumentation in an intensely rhythmic lyrical form, oftentimes telling semi-autobiographic tales relating to a fictionalized counterpart. He became inspired to write and partake of the art of emceeing after hearing the 1999 classic “Black on Both Sides” by Dante Smith (Mos Def) and honed his emceeing chops at the lunch room ciphers of Chicago high schools Whitney M. Young Magnet and George Washington Carver. He has since dedicated every verse, every bar and every word to achieving the ever elusive sense of balance in this hallowed art form. Follow the flow…

Savant has 2 shows coming up in the Tri-State area in March: 3/13/11 at The Trash Bar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Showtime is 9pm, admission $10. 3/15/11 at The Spot Lounge in Newark, NJ. Showtime is 9pm and admission is $10.

Stevie Wonder will be inducted into the Apollo Theater’s Apollo Legends Hall of Fame in New York City at a gala in his honor in June. The theater made the announcement on Wednesday, noting that Wonder first took to the Apollo stage in 1962 at the age of 12. He was a child performer in Berry Gordy’s Motown Revue. Since then, the multi-instrumentalist has gone on to write and sing such hits as “I Just Called to Say I Love You” and “Isn’t She Lovely?” from hit albums including Talking Book, Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life.  He has performed several times at the theater from the 1980s onward, singing at the Save the Apollo concert and a series of solo shows in 2005. Previous inductees into the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame include Michael Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald, Quincy Jones, Aretha Franklin, and Smokey Robinson.
